How The Hearth Industry is Saving Lives in Central America

Stove Bright® Reports On The HPBA's Clean Cookstove Campaign

Smoke from open-cooking fires poses a deadly threat to 1 out of every 3 people on this planet. The hearth industry has raised nearly $100,000 through the 1,000 Stove Challenge to provide safe, fuel-efficient biomass cookstoves to Central Americans!

Join Stove Bright® High Temp Paint and StoveTeam International for a field update on the 1,000 Stove Challenge!
Thursday, January 26th, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM PST, Live via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81014889207

A woman tends an open fire in Guatemala

Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua - Take a deep breath as you learn this fact: smoke from indoor cooking fires kills more people globally than HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.

Smoke lingers as a silent assassin in one out of every three kitchens worldwide. Women and children who tend traditional fires inhale the equivalent of three packs of cigarettes per day. Pneumonia, lower respiratory diseases, lung cancer, stroke, and pulmonary diseases are leading causes of death among these populations.

A surprisingly simple and affordable technology can help: safe, fuel-efficient biomass cookstoves. However, it is still beyond what those in need can afford.

The hearth industry is raising awareness among American and Canadian wood and gas stove and barbecue consumers through the 1,000 Stove Campaign. Through the "Buy a Stove, Give a Stove" model, hearth retailers ask consumers to add a small percentage to their purchase to subsidize a stove for someone in need in Central America. Manufacturers and distributors are also contributing matching funds and corporate donations to support the effort.

Since starting in 2021, the industry has raised nearly $96,000 (960 stoves) and is on the brink of reaching its 1,000 Stove Goal.

Join us for a field report from a recent trip to Central America and see how HPBA And HPBA-C contributions have cleared the air in hundreds of homes!

The hearth industry is uniquely positioned to educate consumers about the issue of open cooking fires in the developing world. Retailers involved in the 1,000 Stove Challenge ask consumers to add a proportionally small donation to their purchase of a new wood or gas stove to fund a clean cookstove in Central America.

The "buy a stove, give a stove" model helps a family in Central America experience a safe, smoke-free kitchen for the first time in their lives. Manufacturers also support the 1,000 Stove Challenge with matching donations or StoveTeam Corporate Sponsor.

Who is StoveTeam International?
