The Challenge of Slash Pile Ignition

Slash pile burning is a necessary part of many forestry, logging, and land management operations, but getting a slash pile ignited is not always straightforward.

Traditional ignition methods can take a lot of physical work and sometimes multiple attempts to get a pile burning, especially when wood is wet, covered in snow, or conditions are less than ideal. With a limited burn window, those delays can mean losing valuable time or missing the opportunity to burn altogether. Traditional methods can also bring safety and environmental concerns, from unexpected flare-ups to fuels that can spill or soak into the surrounding ground.

FireSlug® is a slash pile fire starter designed to make ignition faster, easier, and more reliable. Developed for forestry, logging, land management, and other ground ignition applications, it provides crews with an alternative to traditional ignition methods, especially when working in challenging burn conditions.

A Different Approach to Ground Ignition

Unlike traditional liquid fuels, FireSlug® uses alcohol-based gelled blivets contained in plastic, keeping the fuel contained rather than allowing it to soak into the ground. Each blivet is small and lightweight, making FireSlug® easy to carry, store, and transport to work areas.

Once ignited, FireSlug® provides rapid ignition and burns for approximately 30 minutes. This sustained heat gives surrounding material more time to heat up and establish a fire, making it especially useful for starting wet or dry wood in challenging conditions such as rain or snow.

FORESTNET conducted a third-party field demonstration, putting FireSlug® side-by-side with traditional kindling and propane-lit methods to see how each performed under real-world conditions. The demonstration also included one of the toughest scenarios: igniting a soaking wet slash pile.

What You’ll See in the Demonstration:

• Kindling: Requires splitting and starting by hand, and wet wood can make ignition difficult.

• Propane torch: Requires carrying a roughly 20-pound propane tank from pile to pile. If the pile is wet, there’s no ignition source left behind to continue providing heat once the torch is removed.

• FireSlug®: Small, lightweight, and easy to carry while providing sustained heat directly in the pile.

• Wet pile test: After a gallon of water was poured over the pile, FireSlug® still established the burn and outlasted both the kindling and propane methods.
